The
Belarus music is traced back to at least the 15th century. Skomorokhs
were the major profession for the musicians. An air-filled chant, which was
called Znamenny from the word znamia,
which means sign or neume, was also used until the 16th century in
Orthodox church music, and followed by two hundreds of stylistic innovation
that drew on the Renaissance and Protestant Reformation. In 17th
century, Partesnoe penie, which is part signing became common for choruses, and
then followed by private theatres established in cities like Minsk and Vitebsk.
