The tiompan was a stringed musical instrument that is used by the Gaelic musicians of Ireland and Scotland and perhaps therefore the Isle of Man.
The timpan was of both feminine and masculine gender in classical Irish.  The name is theorized from the Latin word, ‘tympanum’ meaning tambourine or kettle drum and ‘timpan’ does seem to be used in certain ancient text to define a drum.

The adjective timpanach means a performer on the musical instrument but it also recorded in one instance in the Dánta Grádha as describing a cruit.
The feminine noun timpancht means the art of practice of playing the musical instrument.
In the contemporary Irish traditional music, the name of the instrument was used by the late Derek bell, after Galpin’S theory, to refer to the hammered dulcimer instrument
