According to Reiner and Anick, the
connection between Anglo-Celtic and French fiddle music can be traced back to
the 17th century, solo pattern most common in the rugged frontier
land where a small fiddle can be easily managed. As such, cross tunings, drone
notes and complex rhythms came up to fill the gaps left in alone playing and
this lead in a highly developed pattern. Cloqqing was usually the only obtained
accompaniment and much like the aboriginal metis fiddle pattern, percussive and
rhythmic playing is notably developed in this pattern. As with the
French-speaking Cajun fiddle pattern, German button accordion created a
short-lived fashion that temporarily influenced the form and so did the ultimate
introduction of piano in the urban center Montreal.
The material available for
performance in some respects, generally the same as that of the American,
Canadian as well as ancient fiddle, although with the addition of French
deduced chanson. Meanwhile, the interpretation is a lot different the pattern
is also shown in a rare 2011 performance by Kevin Burke that he plays the reels
from Quebec.
