A qanbūs is a short-necked lute that is fabricated in Yemen and went through the Arabian Peninsula. Sachs took it that the instrument derived its name from the Turkic komuz, but the musical instrument is more analogous to the oud. The qanbūs has 12 nylon strings that are plucked with the use of a plastic plectrum to produce sound, just like the guitar. Meanwhile, unlike the guitar, the musical instrument has no frets. The popularity of the qanbūs was discarded during the early 20th century reign of Imam Yahya; by the beginning of the 21st century, the musical instrument known as the oud replaced the qanbūs as the musical instrument of choice in the Middle East.

Yemen migration saw the musical instrument spread through various parts of the Indian Ocean. In Muslim Southeast Asia, known as the gambus, the musical instrument sparked the whole musical genre of its own. In the modern day, the musical instrument is performed in Johor, South Malaysia, in the traditional danced Zapin. In the Comoros, the musical instrument is known as gabusi and in Zanzibar, the musical instrument is known as gabbus.
