The krar is a five-stringed or
six-stringed bowl-shaped lyre instrument that is fabricated in Eritrea and
Ethiopia. The musical instrument is tuned to a pentatonic scale. A modern
version of the musical instrument can be amplified, much in an analogous way as
the electric guitar or the violin.

The musical instrument is a chordophone. The
krar is often decorated with the wood, cloth and beads. The five or six strings
of the musical instrument determine the available pitches of the instrument.
The tone of the musical instrument depend on the playing style of the musician;
bowing, strumming or plucking. If the instrument is plucked, the krar will
manufacture a soft tone. On the other hand, strumming the instrument will
produce a harmonious pulsation. The musical instrument is usually performed by
musician-singers that are known as azmari. The krar often accompanies love
songs and secular songs.
