The garmon is a type of Russian
button accordion. It is a free-reed wind musical instrument. A garmon has two
rows of button on the right side that perform the notes of a diatonic scale,
and at least two rows on the left side that perform the main chords in the key
of the musical instrument and its relative harmonic minor keys. Many musical
instruments have additional right-hand buttons with helpful accidental notes,
additional left-hand chords for performing in related keys, and a row of
free-bass buttons, to enhance playing of bass melodies on the musical
instrument.

The musical instrument can be of two
major classes; unisonoric, meaning that each button of the instrument plays the
same note or chord when the bellows is being expanded as it does when it is
compressed, and bisonoric , which means that the note depend on the direction
of the bellows work. The garmon is an essential musical instrument for
Caucasian and volgian folk and popular music.
The garmoni came into Georgia from
Europe in the1830s and immediately became a popular musical instrument among
the folk musicians. It is especially well-known in Tusheti, where it is used as
an accompanying musical instrument as well as a solo musical instrument.
