The bangu is often simply called
‘gu’. The bangu drum is a Chinese frame drum that when struck with the use of
one or two bamboo small sticks, can produce a sharp dry sound crucial to the
aesthetics of Chinese opera. Striking the drum in different places will
manufacture different sounds. The musical instrument is used in many Chinese
music chamber music groups. The percussion section of the instrument is
essential in the Chinese opera, with battle or martial scenes that are called
wu-chang. The player of this musical instrument is the director or the
conductor of the orchestra. The director works with the other members of the
percussion section to produce the right mood for the listeners or the audience
and actor and actresses on the stage.

The musical drum that is about 25 cm
in diameter and about 10 cm deep, has its frame manufactured of wedges of hard
wood gummed together to form a circle. Animal skin is then outspread over the
frame of wedges that is then secured by a metal band. The wedges do not extend
to the small area in the center where the drum is struck. The bangu musical
drum is held in its own stand with four iron rings.
Some versions of this musical
instrument have only three rings and three supporting legs holding the drum.
These versions of the drum are often portable with a collapsible stand section.
