The
European based military group music was the first in the Virgin Island through
ship based groups as well as the small military collectives of the Danish troops
based on the islands. The regular group show was given by Danish musicians in
Charlotte Amalie at least as early as 1888 at the freedom garden bandstand. The
native brass band reported the first official group of the local musicians that
formed under the direction of Lionel Roberts in 1907, while Adams Juvenile
group appeared in 1910 and would be invested into the United State Navy when
the service took over the administration of the island from Denmark in 1917.
The invention of this all black unit into United States Navy was remarkable for
its period and thus recognized the first black musicians in the United State
navy since the war of 1812, the United States navy group of the Virgin islands gave
the regular public shows on St. Thomas until the departure of the naval
administration in 1931.
