The music of Barbados

The Barbados music comprises of the distinctive national styles of culture and popular music as well as elements of Western classical and religious music. The folk music of Barbados is a syncretic mix of African and British elements, and also the island’s music reflects the mix through songs type and styles, instruments, dances aesthetic principles.

The Bajan traditional culture include the Landship movement which is satirical, informal organization based on the British navy, tea meetings, tuk bands and numerous traditional songs and dances. The modern Barbados music includes Calypso, spouge, and other styles, many of which were imported from Trinidad, the United States and other countries. Barbados is located near Cuba, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and the Virgin Islands and these regions represent one of the few centres of Caribbean jazz.
