shvi also called the “Շվի,” meaning “whistle” in the local
Armenian language is an end-blown fipple flute that has a labium mouth piece
that is similar to that of a recorder. Is either made of the wood, reed or
bamboo and has a length that is about 12 inches and has a range of an octave
and a half. This musical instrument which has 8 holes in front of it; with 7
holes made for the playing of the instrument while the other 1 is
thumb-hole. At the upper end there is a
metal ring used for the sound adjustment. Most Armenian duduk or zurna players
learn to use the shvi before moving on to learn either of the two instruments.
