The n’vike which can also be called novike is a bowed string musical instrument that has its origin from Toba people of the Gran Chaco of South America. The word n’vike has no English term but means the act of a jaguar sharpening his claws on a tree.

The novike is a one-stringed acoustic instrument which is bowed with a string bow also called “checne’c”. Originally it is known that the string is a product of the hairs on the neck of a wild pig but was later replaced with the arrival of the Spanish horsehair. The monochord is kept on top of a resounding body such as calabaza gourd or a sheet of a tin with an opening in the top of the instrument.
