Although
inhabited prior to the 16th century, little fact is known about the
Barbadian music before the arrival of the Portuguese in the year 1536 and later
the English in 1627. The Portuguese left small influence, but the English
culture and music helped shape the Island’s heritage. Also, the Irish and the
Scottish settlers emigrated in the 17th century, working in the
tobacco company and bringing about the most recent music in the country. The
middle of the 1700’s saw the decline of the tobacco company and the rise of
sugarcane, as well as the foundation of large numbers of African slaves. The
modern Bajan music is thus, largely a mixture of English and African elements,
with Irish, Scottish, and the modern American and Caribbean (especially the
Jamaican) yielding influence as well.
