The Barbadian folk songs are heavily influenced by the music of England with most of the songs based on events that were happening at the time of their composition such as the liberation of the slaves of Barbados, and the coronations of Victoria 1 George V, and Elizabeth 1, and this song tradition dates back to 1650.

The most famous Barbadian folk songs are associated with the island’s lower class labourers, who were held on to the folk heritage.
