Goombay is a kind of Bahamian music and also a drum used to display it. The goombay drum is a membranophone that is made of a goat skin head held between the legs and played with the bare hands or a pair of stick. The goombay as a name is believed to have developed gradually to become a similar instrument with local African-American music related to calypso.

In Bahamas, goombay’s most famous player in the modern times was Alphonso Blind Blake Higgs. He showed his talent at the Nassau International Airport for many years. A similar instrument called ‘Gombey’ has been revealed to be in existence in Bermuda. Goombay is also another spelling for the ‘gumbe’ that is in use in Jamaica.
