Biography
Paulo Mendes Campos was born in the state of Minas Gerais, he was the son
of a physician and a writer Mario Mendes Campos and D. Maria José
de Lima Campos. He started his studies at the state capital and kept it on in
Cachoeira do Campo, which was the place a Portuguese priest predicted to him
saying, ‘You will still be a writer’. He completed his studies in the city of
São João del Rei.
Paulo Mendes Campos started his studies of dentistry, veterinary medicine
and law and never finished them, the dreams of being an aviator that he had
never come through. At a very young age, Paulo Mendes Campos moved into
literary life as a member of the Minas Gerais'
generation of the year 1945 together with the following people Fernando Sabino,
Otto Lara Resende, Hélio Pellegrino, João Ettiene Filho, Carlos Castello Branco
and Murilo Rubião. He was the director of the literary supplement of Folha de
Minas in Belo Horizonte and also worked in the construction company of the
uncle. He went to the city of Rio de Janeiro in the year 1945 and it was there
that he met with Pablo Neruda.

Paulo Mendes Campos worked also as a
translator and an editor.
