Biography
Rafael Squirru was born and raised in the city of Buenos Aires in
Argentina. He was educated at the Saint Andrew's Scot
School and at the Jesuit
El Salvador Secondary School. He completed his higher education at the
University of Edinburgh in the year 1948.
After he had found
the Buenos Aires Museum of Modern Arts in the year 1956, Rafael Squirru went on to champion the cause
of the Argentine and Latin American arts being the Director of the Cultural
Affairs of the country in the year 1960 in the government regime of Arturo
Frondizi.
He was named the Cultural director of the |Organization of American
States in the year 1963 with the headquarters located in Washington DC and he
kept on with the job of promoting the North and Latin American Culture until he
resigned in the year 1970. It was at the period that he supported the edifice
of the impressive commemorative cenotaph to the United Stated President called John
F. Kennedy by the artist from Uruguay called Lincoln Presno in QuemúQuemú.
Back in the city of
Buenos Aires, where he is currently residing with the wife, Rafael Squirru has supported the culture of
the country in all of its existence with the use of many activities of lectures
in his own nation and outside the country.
Most of his poetry and prose volume writings have been published over the
years and most of them today are out of print and are hard to see.
Rafael Squirru has corresponded with the following personalities; Sir
Herbert Read, Edward Albee, Julio Cortázar, Alejandra Pizarnik, Jackie Kennedy,
Henry Miller, Fernando Demaría,Marco Denevi, Robert F. Kennedy, Alberto
Ginastera,Edward Hopper, Ned O'Gorman,Antonio Berni, Leonardo Castellani,
Emilio Pettoruti, Thomas Merton, and LeopoldoMarechal.
