Club Career
Rui Marques came through the junior team of Benfica, but he left the club to join the Swiss club, Baden. With the good time he had with Baden, Rui Marques started his professional football at the German club, SSV Ulm 1846 in the 1999/2000 season. He after that joined Hertha BSC in Berlin, the capital of Germany, but he never played any game for the first team of the club.
After just six months with the club, he made a move to VfB Stuttgart and he spent three and a half seasons with the club and won the 2002 UEFA Intertoto Cup with the club after they beat the French club, Lille. Rui Marques moved to CS Maritimo of Madeir, Portugal, and it was there that he played in the Portuguese Premier Division. After he struggled to make the first team of the club, he was released by the club after a season with the club. He was released as a free agent and that made him to start looking for a club.
Before the 2005/06 season, Rui Marques went on a trial to Ipswich Town where he impressed the manager of the club, Joe Royle to want to sign him as a permanent player of the club, but rather he decided to join Leeds United on a Bosman transfer. He was signed by the manager of the club, Kevin Blackwell, but the player made only one appearance for the club in the match that was played against Oldham, he never played any game again for the club in that season with Paul Butler, Sean Gregan, Mathew, Kilgallon, Clarke Carlisle and MichealDuberry all playing better than he was in that season. Towards the end of the season, Rui Marques went on a loan deal to Hull City for a short term that was cut because of injury problems. He played for the country for the 2006 World Cup and was one of the two players of the club that played for their in the world cup, with Eddie Lewis playing for USA.
The 2006/07 season saw the player neglected by the coach of the club, Kevin Blackwell and initially by the new manager of the club, Dennis Wise, who said that the player would never play under his administration along with other fringe players in the club. Rui Marques never complained about the isolation from the first team of the club as he worked hard to make the first team of the club. His hard work was rewarded when he got the chance to play for the club in the match that was won 2-1 against Coventry City on the 1st Januar7 2007, and he played in the centre back position for the club. He immediately became one of the best players in the club. Leeds United was relegated that season, but to show his commitment to the club, Rui Marques signed a new deal with the club on the 7th August 2007. He was a regular starter with the club and he scored his first goal for the club on the 18th August 2007 in the match that was played against Southend United, and the game finished 4-1 in favor of his club.
Before leaving the club, the manager of the club, Dennis Wise opined that he would offer Rui Marques a new deal and he also said that the player should wait a bit longer before signing a new deal with the club to help increase his wages. Upon the arrival of the new manager of the club, Gary McAllister, he was handed a new deal but talks stalled with the length of the new deal. Talks were held till the summer of that year. In the summer of that year, he was linked with a move to Sunderland that plays in the Premier League. Meanwhile, on the 20th May 2008, Rui Marques signed a new deal with Leeds United.
On the 14th May 2010, Rui Marques was announced to be free to get himself a new club and he would not be handed a new deal by the club. When he left the club, he was the longest serving player in the club.
International Career
Despite being eligible to represent the national team of Portugal, Rui Marques pledged his allegiance to the Angolan national team, which was his country of birth. He was among the national team players that represented Angola in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, and he played against Mexico in the group stage, he also played against Iran as well as against Portugal with his country finishing third in the group. Rui Marques was among the national team of the country that played in the 2008 African Cup of Nations and he played all the games that were played by the country.
Rui Marques was called to play for the country in the 2010 African Cup of Nations where his country was the host nation of the tournament.
