Biography
Yasmina Khadra an officer in the Algerian army adopted the name of his
wife as a pseudonym to prevent military censorship. Despite the publication of
several novels in the country, Algeria, Moulessehoul only brought out his true
identity to the world in the year 2001 after he has left the army and leaving
for France. He left the army as a major in the year 2000. Anonymity was the
only solution for his to survive and to prevent censorship at the time of the
Algerian Civil War. In the year 2004, Newsweek approbated him to be one of the
rare writers in the country that are capable of giving a meaning to the
violence in the country today.
Moulessehoul’s novel set in Afghanistan under the Taliban, The Swallows
of Kabul, was shortlisted for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in
the year 2006, as well as The Attack in the year 2008.
Moulessehoul became the director of the Algerian Cultural Center in Paris
in November of the year 2007.
On the 2nd November 2013, Moulessehoul announced his candidacy
for the presidency of his country, Algeria.
