Jazz was introduced to Europe after the end of the First World War and during that period, the term jazz was commonly used to define everything new and hip. In 1921, the first foreign jazz group was introduced in Norway and the appearance of the saxophone among Norwegian jazz players was noticed in the year 1923. Soon the main Norwegian jazz ensemble established which is made up of one or two saxophones, violin, drums and piano banjo.

Funny Boys made the initial serious album of jazz music in the year 1938. Though, the economic problem of the 1930s weakened the further creation of Norwegian jazz ensembles. From the 1940s, the violin began to play more essential role in Norwegian jazz. In the present years the Norway has also become a major force in the world jazz. Jazz plays an essential role in everyday Norwegian music life, and it is heard in the bars, cafes and in the streets. Oslo is the point of today’s Norwegian jazz. One of the inventors of the Norwegian jazz includes Jan Garbarek. His cool almost surround area approach, which is a Norwegian jazz, though presently there have been moves to join with the electronica and post-rock. He has also related jazz folk Norwegian music, as proof in his record Rosenfole with commended Norwegian traditional-style singer known as Agnes Buen Garnas. His daughter, Anja Garbarek is one of the musicians that have renewed the jazz scene, mixing sweet melodies with electronic sounds and pop beats. The work of Christian Wallumrod band known as Fabula Suite Lugano, The Zool Is Far serves as a leading instance of the current Norwegian jazz, join with ECM musicians Trygve Seim and Frode Haltli. Other current Norwegian jazz artists include a group Supersilent, a drummer known as Jon Christensen, a guitarist Terje Rypdal, a pianist known as Bugge Wesseltoft, a percussionist known as Paal Nilssen-Love, bassists known as Ingebrigt Haket Flaten, Nils Petter Molvaer and an experimental jazz ensemble Jaga Jazzist. Many of these musicians record from the seminal jazz label known as ECM. Though some of the new musicians record for the newer Norwegian labels known as Smalltown Superjazz, Jazzland Records and Rune Grammofon.
