Hip hop music is a genre of rhythmic music which is frequently accompanied by rapping. The hip hop was introduced to Norway in the summer of 1984 with the movie Beat Street which was shown in Norwegian cinemas. The hip hop later became a small but eager subculture and it increased from breakdance and graffiti culture to rap music. In the 1980s and 1990s Norwegian rap was based on English and the Norwegian hip hop scene was heavily influenced by the American one. In the beginning of the 21st century, many musicians began to use Norwegian instead of English, and also rapping in diverse Norwegian languages began to become general. The ensemble known as Tungtvann was one of the first that rapped in their dialect. In the mid-2000s, hip hop became a more normal genre, and many of the young people began to ask question about the hip hop while the modern and avant-garde groups like Side Brok appeared. And later on multilingual and multicultural Norwegian groups with minority backgrounds such as Minoeritet and Karpe Diem have achieved in becoming famous.
