The
rock music scene in India is small compared to the filmi or mixture musicality
scenes but as of present years has come into its own success on cult status of
classes. The rock music in India has its roots in the 1960s when the
international musicians like The Beatles visited India and brought their music
with them. These musicians collaborated with the Indian artists like Zakir
Huassain and Ravi Shankar have led to the creation of raga rock. International
short wave radio station such as the voice of America, radio Ceylon and BBC
played a major part in bringing western pop, folk and rock music to the people.
You can hear some of the songs that were heard over these stations during the
1960s. Though, the Indian rock bands started to gain influence only much later,
around the late 1980s. It was around this period that the rock band Indus Creed
formerly called the rock machine got itself noticed on the international stage
with hits like Rock N Roll Renegade. Other bands quickly followed. As of
recent, the rock music scene in India is quietly growing every day and
gathering more fan. With the introduction of the MTV in the early 1990s, the
Indians started to be exposed to different forms of rock such as grunge and
speed metal. This influence can be clearly seen in several Indian ensembles
todays. The cities of Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore have appeared as
major melting pots for the rock and metal fans. Bangalore has been the center
for the rock and metal trend in Indian. Some prominent ensembles include
Kryptos, pentagram, Indian Ocean, Thermal and a Quarter, No Idea, Zero, Abandoned
Agony, Half step Down, Eastern Fare, Scribe, Indus Creed, Demonic Resurrection,
Motherjane, Soulm, ate, Avial and Zynema (Born of Unity). The future looks
encouraging, thanks to persons like Green Ozone, Eastern Fare Music foundation,
Dogma Tone, that are dedicated to help and support Indian rock.

One
of the most popular rock artists in the world is the late Freddie Mercury of
Queen. Born Farrokh Bomi Bulsara to Indian parents in Zanzibar, he was raised
in Panchgani near Mumbai. Mercury was influenced earlier on by the Indian
playback singer Lata Mangeshkar along with the western influences like Jimi
Hendrix, John Lennon, the Beatle and Led Zeppelin.
