Hip Hop Music of India

The hip hop in India had begun at around the year 1990 and Baba Sehgal is credited as India’s first rapper. Hip hop music became all over and also popular with the song Pettai Rap from the Tamil movie Kadhalan starring Prabhu Deva. The song propelled Suresh Peters as a rapper and a music director. Malaysian based Yogi B and Natchatra brought in the culture of Tamil rap in India. Yogi B, as part of the poetic Ammo, achieved success when they won at the Malaysian Anugerah Industri Musik (AIM) (Music Awards in the year 1999, 2000, and 2001). Yogi B is now the most critically acclaimed Kollywood (the Tamil Movie Industry) rapper because of his work on the 2007 movie Pollathavan.

Even international musicians like Mobb Deep, The Black Eyed Peas, 50 cent, and Chamillionaire have performed in India in cities such as Hyderabad, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai and Mumbai. Snoop Dogg emerged in a song from the film Singh Is Kinng in the year 2008 which further popularized hip hop music amongst the people of India.
