The
wallachia is a place for the taraf ensembles, which are possibly the best-known
expression of Romanian traditional culture. Some of the dances that is
associated with tarafs include hora, geamparale, brau and sarba. The fiddle
dominates the music, with the cimbalom and double bass following it. The cobza,
once well-known in the area, has been hugely replaced by the cimbalom. The
lyrics are about the heroes like the haidouks. Taraf de Haidouks is a
particularly popular taraf and have gained international credit since their
1988 debut with the label known as Ocora. The haidouks first acquired
visibility as lautari, folk performers at weddings and other festive events.
