The
murga is a type of Montevidean musical theatre for Carnival festivities. A folk
murga orchestra includes the chorus and three drummers and this is a kind of
murga done on a stage at carnival. The singers perform in harmony in terms of
use five choral parts. The choral production tends to be nasal and loud with
little variation in volume. The drumming instruments, originated from the
European military ensemble and it is the bombo (a shallow bass drum worn at the
waist and played horizontally), redoblante which is the snare drum and the
platillos which is the cymbals. The two main important pieces of the act are
the opening chant which is the saludo and the closing chant which is the
retirada or the despedida.
