The minlonga was a South American pattern of chant that was renowned during in 1870s. The milonga was originated from an earliest pattern of singing regarded as payade de contrapunto.

The chant was set to an actively 2/4 tempo which often include the musical improvisation. Over the period, dance steps and other musical influences were added, finally giving way to the tango. For now the minolnga dance is still use for dancing but the milonga dancing of today is imitative of tango.
