Marrabenta
is a renowned type of music from Mozambique. It has its roots from the urban
and meant for dancing. Marranebta was born as a mixture of imported European
music played on created materials. The word marrabenta came from the Portuguese
rebentar which means to break, it is a reference to a cheap guitar strings that
snapped quickly. The instruments were designed out of a tin cans and pieces of
wood. The lyrics were usually in a local languages and it include songs of
social criticism as well as love.

Additionally,
there are songs whose lyrics were in Portuguese, and it is the official
language of Mozambique for nationwide and international advancement of songs to
other CPLP nations. The late 70s saw the great improvement in marrabenta as
1001 music production recorded musicians and performed large shows. The
gathered album Amanhecer was produced and it was followed by more of LPs under
the title of Ngoma.
The
early most powerful marrabenta artist was Fany Pfumo, whose popularity began
after the achievement of Loko ni kumbuka Jorgina. He recorded in South Africa
on HMV and later joined South African kwela into his music. The orchestra
Marrabenta Star de Mocambique was established in 1979 which was led by
long-time artist of Wazimbo. The group travelled around Europe and some parts
of the world and later brought the international recognition of marrabenta.
Many
of the greatest renowned artists in the new Mozambique spent time with group
Marrabenta Star de Mocambique which includes Chico Antonio, Mingas, Neyma,
Stewart Sukuma and Jose Mucavel while other well-known band include Ghorwane.
