The
Igbo tribes live in the south-east of Nigeria and play a wide collection of
traditional instruments. They are known for their ready acceptance of foreign
patterns and were an essential part of Nigerian highlife. The very extensive
instrument is the 13-stringed zither known as an oboe. The Igbo also play the
slit drums, flutes, udus, xylophones, lyres and lutes and more presently, the
imported European brass instruments.

Courtly
music is played among the more folk Igbo, to retain their royal customs. The
ufie (slit drum) is used to wake the chief and communicate meal times and other
essential information to him. Drum and bell bands are used to announce when the
chief travels and returns back to the villages. Meal times may include pie and
other desert foods for the holidays.
