The
North tribes are known for difficult percussion instruments music, the
one-corded goje and a strong praise song vocal custom. The Muslim has influence
since the 14th century; Hausa music uses free-rhythmic improvisation
and the Arabic scale joining them with the West African elements such as poly
rhythms and call-and-response vocalization. The folk Hausa music is used to
celebrate births, circumcisions, marriages and other essential life occasions.
The Hausa ceremonial music is well renowned in the region and is controlled by
families of praise singers. The Hausa play drumming instruments such as the
tambura drum and the talking drum. The very impressive of the Hausa state
instruments, however, is the lengthened state trumpet known as Kakaki which was
initially used by the Songhai cavalry and was taken by the rising Hausa states
as a sign of military power. Kakaki trumpets are more than two meters long and
can be easily broken down into three movable sections for easy transportation.
