Taonga
puoro is a pre-colonial Maori music which was based around a type of
micro-tonal chanting and instruments; a variety of blown, twirled and struck
instruments made out of hollowed-out wood, whale ivory, stone, human bone and
albatross bone. During the 19th century, European immigrate brought
musical types to New Zealand including choral music and brass bands and artists
started traveling to New Zealand in the 1860s and Pip bands became popular
during the early 20th century.
Some
of the renowned New Zealand music has been influenced by country, jazz, blues,
rock and roll and hip hop with many of these genres given a special New Zealand
clarification. A number of famous musicians have gone on to gain international
achievement which include OMC, Ladyhawke, Bic Runga, Split Enz Crowded, The
Naked and famous, Flight of the Conchords and Fat Freddy’s Drop.
The
New Zealand has a national group and many other regional groups. A number of
New Zealand composers have gotten international names. Ross Harris, Martin
Lodge, Douglas Lilburn, Jack Body, John Psathas, Jenny McLeod, Gillian
Whitehead and Garethe were the most popular.
