Mauritania
music comes mainly from the country’s largest ethnic group which is the Moors.
Musicians from Moorish society occupy the lowest class, iggawin. Artists from
this class used song to praise successful warriors as well as their patrons.
Iggawin also have the traditional role of massagers, spreading news between the
villages. The new Mauritania professional artists are paid for their
performance; wealthy patrons sometimes record the entertainment more than the
artists themselves and they are considered to own the recording.

The
traditional instruments include the hourglass-shaped four-stringed lute known
as tidinit and the woman’s kora-like ardin. The drumming instruments include
the tbal (a kettele drum) and daghumma (which is a rattle).
