Zealand have many popular heavy metal bands which include 8 Foot Sativa,
blindspott, In Dread Response, The Datsuns, Ulcerate, Dawn of Azazel and Sinate
Beatwars with most metal ensembles playing death metal. Wellington Black metal
band known as Demoniac was also among the first to have international credit that
produce three albums on the French Evil Omen and Osmose labels. The band later
moved to the United Kingdom where guitarists Herman Li and Sam Totman went on
to create the renowned power metal band known as Dragon Force.

Presently
Ulcerate who is signed to a high profile United States label Relapse Records
have gained extensive international credit for his combination of brutal death
metal with the post-rock influences.
In
the present eras, a different movement has appeared amongst New Zeeland’s death
metal scene of an intentionally old-school, raw war metal sound coupled with
aggressive, militaristic lyrics and images classified by ensembles such as Dawn
of Azazel, Diocletian and Vassafor, all of whom have gained attention within
the international underground.
