Ebenezer
Obey created the international Brother in 1964 and his ensemble soon matched
that of Ik Dairo as the biggest Nigeria orchestra. Each of them plays a form of
bluesy, guitar-based and highlife-influenced juju that included difficult
talking drum-dominated drumming elements. Obey’s lyrics talk about the problems
that appealed to urban viewers and joined Yoruba customs and his conservative
Christian faith. His opposing was King Sunny Ade who appeared in the same time,
making the Green spots in 1966 and then gaining some main hits with the African
beats after 1974’s Esu Biri Ebo Mi. Ade and obey contested to join the new
influences into juju music and to get new supporters; Hawaiian slack-key,
keyboards and background vocals were among the inventions that was added during
the rapidly changing time. Ade added a strong element of Jamaican dub music and
brought the training of having the guitar play the rhythm, and the drums
playing the melody. During that time, juju songs changed from short pop songs
to a long track, frequently over 20 minutes in length. Ensembles grew from four
artists in the initial bands; to IK Dairo it became 10 and also became 30 to
Obey and Ade.
