A zabumba is a type of bass drum that
is used in the Brazilian music. The player of this musical instrument wears the
drum while he is standing up and uses both hands to play the drum. The zabumba
generally ranges from 16 to 22 inches in diameter and it is 5 to 8 inches tall.
The shell of the instrument is produced of wood and may make use of either the
skin or plastic drum heads and it is often tensioned with metal lugs and
tension rods.

The top head of the instrument is
normally muted with tape or cloth strip and then struck with a mallet that is
covered with cloth to give out a low fundamental note with very small
overtones. The bottom head of the instrument is tuned to be tighter and it is
struck with a thin, stick that is called “bacalhao” which is like a twig and is
held in the left hand to give out a high fundamental note with a sharp attack
and many overtones.
The zabumba is quite similar to the
drum that is found in the Mediterranean region such as the davul when it comes
to the construction, tuning and the performance technique of the instrument.
The musical instrument is used in the categories of forro, coco, baiao and
xote.
