The 4-string banjo can also be called
Samba-banjo or banjo-cavaco. It is a Brazilian musical instrument which is
derived from the cavaco and very much associated with Samba and its features.
The musical instrument was introduced first by a musician called Almir Guineto
in the late 1970s and the beginning of the 1980s, attending on one hand the
importance of louder instrument similar to the cavaco and on the other hand,
the drive for innovation.

The samba-banjo possesses the same
tuning and range as the cavaquinho although its tone quality is quite
different; sounding like a traditional banjo but pitched higher. The musical
instrument can be played with a pick for rhythm accompaniment with
sophisticated beats produced by brushing the instrument; so it is a rhythmic
instrument and sometimes regarded to be a breaking repetitive styles and
surprising the listener with unknown new made rhythmic figures while keeping
the rhythm of the music stable.
