The timbau which is also called the timbal in Brazilian local language is a membranophone musical instrument that is derived from the caxambu drum. The timbal varies in sizes and it is slightly conical, the weight of the instrument is light and it is made of lacquered wood or metal with a tunable head that is made of nylon.  The drum is usually found in Bahia, as it is believed that the instrument has its origin in Bahia and is mostly used to play Axe and samba reggae. They are played in almost the same way with the Atabaque; another hand drum that has been brought to Brazil in the slavery era and it is used in condomble rituals. In the 1980s, a music movement was arranged to bring the timbal to be part of the popular music.
