A tan-tan is a hand drum that is cylindrical in shape and originated from the Brazilian world and it is used in small samba and pagoda group. The instrument imitates the big surdo which is played by famous samba baterias but because it is smaller in size, the tan-tan is not as loud as the surdo and so it is played not very often in big samba schools. The tan-tan can be played while sitting or standing by one hand beating the drum head while the other hand taps the metal wood or wood body of the musical instrument.
