The
ring repique is a percussion musical instrument that emanated from Brazil. It
is a small drum that is commonly carved of aluminium, and different from the
hand-repique, the instrument has two drum heads which are the bottom and the
top and they are often made of the animal skin. The instrument also has a
different and much deeper tone quality. In Brazil, this instrument is used
specially to play the samba and its variants such as the pagoda.

The
ring-repique bears this name because traditionally, the musician always wears
one or more rings to manipulate the drum. Striking the body of the instrument with
his fingers and using the thumb to play on the bottom part or the top part of
the instrument. The free hand hits the top skin and this style give the performer
the space to play more than one rhythm. The ring-repique was introduced in the
1970s by the musician called “Doutor”.
