A repinique is a
two-headed Brazilian drum that is used in their samba baterias. It is used in
the Rio de Janeiro as well as Sao Paulo Carnival baterias and also in the
baterias of Bahia where is also known as the repique. The instrument has an
equivalent which is the tom-tom in the non-Brazilian drum kit or to the tenor
drum marching bands. The repinique is often tuned very high to give out a tone
that cuts through the sound of the rest of the bacteria and the repinique is a
lead and solo instrument.

Specifically, the body of
the instrument is made of metal. The heads of the instrument is made of nylon
and is tightened through the use of metal tuning rods. The instrument is made
to be smaller in diameter than the Brazilian caixa but several inches longer in
height and does not have a snare. The repinique can be carried using a shoulder
strap fixed to one of the tuning rods. In Rio-style samba, the instrument is
played with the use of a wooden stick and one hand. In Bahia, the instrument is
played with two wooden sticks although in some cases also they play it like the
Rio style. The instrument may also be played with two plastics that are thin
also known as the “whippy” sticks.
The repinique was
introduced to the samba percussion in the 1950s. By then this drum was produced
out of wood with natural heads carved from goatskin. Also the pattern of
playing the instrument was different. Baterias simply include a group of
repinique players whose styles set the tempo to which the rest of the bateria
plays by detailing on the bases. The instrument is also often used by the
musical director as a lead instrument given out calls to which the rest of the
bateria answers in a set design. The instrument is also used to assist the
dancer in keeping the tempo and rhythm of the piece.
The repinique is also used in American classical
music. A solo repinique was found in the 30 minutes symphonic work titled
“Rhapsody for solo percussion and orchestra” by Ney Gabriel Rosauro.
