The Pambalas, a community in the
southern part of Andhra, specialize in playing the musical instrument. This
unit of two musical drums is held near the waist of the instrumentalist or put
on the floor and beaten with the use of sticks, or with the hand and a stick. In
the simpler versions, the two drums are manufactured of wood, but there is a
version of the musical instrument in which one of the drums is manufactured
with wood and the other drum is manufactured with brass: the wooden one is
called veeru vanam and the metal drum is known as vengala pambai. The musical
instrument is played in the traditional group naiyandi melam.
