The musical drum is played only with the hands. The Sankrit name of nambiar "Pānivāda" comes from this reason.
The musical instrument is treated as a Brahmachaarya and it is seen to be sacred. The musical instrument is used to accompany the holy ritualistic temple performance of Koodiyattam and Koothu. Only Ambalavasi Nambiar community members are permitted to play the instrument inside the temple or Koothambalams still.
