Kriol Music in Belize

The most well-known styles created by Kriol musician is brukdown. The brukdown evolved out the music and dance of loggers, especially in the form of buru. The buru is often satirical in nature, and eventually it grew more urban, then joined by a donkey’s jawbone, percuss and a banjo. The world brudown came from the broken down calypso, which means to the similarities between brukdown and Trinidadian calypso music; the presence of large numbers of the Jamaicans in Belize that also led to influence the mento music.

The recent forms, the new instruments have been added to brukdown, the boom and chime orchestra use bass guitar, electronic guitar and congas for example. The famous brukdown orchestra which includes the Tigers, the mahogany Chips, Mimi Female Duet and Brad Pattico, Brukdown remain a rural, rarely recorded genre.
