Gaida: Bulgarian musical instrument

A gaida is a bagpipe that is from the Balkans and the southern Europe. The southern Europe calls theirs gaida, the Turkish calls it gayda or Tulum, the Macedonian calls it gajda, and Bulgaria calls it gaida while the Albanians call it gajde.

            The gadja bag collectively made of goat or sheep hide. All these regions have different ways of treating or preparing the hide. The simplest way of treating the hide is to use salt, while the more complex means involves the use of milk, flour, and the extraction of fur. In Macedonian region the bag is turned inside out in a way that the fur will be inside the bag.

            Each chanter is fitted with a reed that is manufactured from bamboo. The chanter is a pipe on which this musical instrument can be played and it can possess a conical bore or cylindrical bore and the popular woods for preparing them are cornel wood or plum wood. Some types of gaida can be made with double bore chanter such as the Serbian three-voiced gajda which has eight finger holes; the top four are covered by the thumb and the first three fingers of the hand then the remaining four fingers of the other hand is made to cover the remaining four holes. The musical instrument possesses a drone which is a long pipe that gives it a constant harmony note, it has no finger holes.
