The musical instrument is played by keeping
one part of the cymbals in the left hand banging the other instrument on the
right hand of the player. Although this musical instrument is tiny by size, the
instrument does not have more thickness than the common cymbal and as such gives
a unique chime.
The elathalam is never a laid musical
instrument but it is used in a number of ethnic Kerala percussion groups like
Panchavadyam, Chenda melam and thayambaka apart from second singer on a
Kathakali stage besides giving the beat in Kushal Pattu and Kombu Pattu.
The main popular players of the musical instrument of the modern
days includes; Cheriyath Thanku Marar, Chelakkara Unnikrishnan, Maniyamparambil
Mani, Kothachira Sekharan Nair, Chengamanad Paramu Nair, Pallavur Raghava
Pisharody, Pookottur Sasidharan (Asiad Sasi), Guruvayur Velutty and Peruvanam
Murali.
