The Guadeloupean boula is a hand drum that is analogous to the tambour bele and is used in the gwo ka and on special occasions like the wakes, wrestling matches and carnival celebrations. The instrument is a hand drum that performs low-pitched sounds and is played transversally and single-handed.
The boula of Carriacou is also a hand drum that is most often made of rum casks; it is also called the tambour dibas and is used in the big drum culture.
The Haitian version of the musical instrument is a cow skin hand drum that is used in rada music.

The boula of Trinidad and Tobago accompanies the stick-fighting dance that is known as Kalenda, and is a double-headed barrel drum that is played open-handed.
