Waldomiro Freitas Autran Dourado
was born in the city of Patos de Minas in the state of Minas Gerais. As against
the pattern of literature in the country, Autran Dourado’s works show much
concern with the form of literature with the use of much more hard words and
expressions. The setting of most of the works he did is the state of Minas
Gerais, which resemble the early part of the 20th century and that
of the mid-20th century regionalist trend in the literature of the
country. Most critics in the country see his work to have some analogous nature
to the Baroque literature.
In the year 1981¸ Autran Dourado was the winner of the Goethe Prize. He
was also the winner of the most crucial literary prize in the Portuguese
Sprachraum, called Camões Prize in the year 2000.
Autran Dourado died of stomach bleeding on the 30th September
2012 in the city of Rio de Janeiro at the age of 86.
