Life and Career
Otto Schenk was born to catholic parents. His father was a lawyer and had
Jewish roots and so he left his job after the 1938 Anschluss. Otto Schenk
studied acting at the Max Reinhardt Seminar and kicked off
his acting career at the Theater in der Josefstadt and the Wiener Volkstheater
and kicked off his career as a comedian at the Vienna's Simpl cabaret theater.
He kicked off his directing career in the year 1953 at the small venues in the
city of Vienna and that led him to the bigger theatre of the country like
Burgtheater, the Munich Kammerspiele and the Salzburg Festival and he staged plays
by William Shakespeare, Arthur Schnitzler, Ödön von Horváth, Anton Chekhov.
Otto Schenk directed his first opera in the year 1957, his success as an
opera director was in the year 1962 with the Alban Berg's Lulu at the Theater an der Wien, the
production was later moved to the Vienna State Opera where Otto Schenk made his first appearance in the
year 1964 with the Leoš Janáček's Jenůfa.
He was contracted as a permanent producer for many seasons by the State
Opera, while keeping up with his freelance actor of the country, comedian and a
director in Austria and in Germany. He was engaged as a director of a studio
production of Verdi's Othello that was sung in German language with a stellar cast. He worked
for many theatres from Germany like Berlin State Opera, the Bavarian
State Opera and the Hamburg State Opera.
In the United States,
Otto Schenk is popular for his lavish,
realist, traditionalist stagings at the Metropolitan Opera, more with
the production of the Richard Wagner's four-opera epic called Der Ring des Nibelungen.
Otto Schenk has appeared in more than 30 movies, mostly in Germany. He
was the director of Reigen, a film that is based on Arthur
Schnitzler's Reigen.
