He is known for his performances in the films of the country like Jules and Jim (1962), Ship of Fools (1965), The Spy Who Came in from the Cold (1965), Fahrenheit 451 (1966) and The Shoes of the Fisherman (1968).
He was a receiver of Academy Award nomination in the 1966 and also two BAFTA award nominations in the year 1966 and in the year 1967. Oskar Werner was the winner of Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture in 1966.
Biography
Oskar Werner was born in the city of Vienna; he spent much of his childhood years under the care of the grandmother, who showered him with so much stories about the Burgtheatre of the city, and it was there that he was accepted at the age of 18 by Lothar Muthel. He made his first appearance with the use of the stage name Oskar Werner in October of the year 1941. In December of the year 1941, Oskar Werner was taken into the Deutsche Wehrmacht.
Oskar Werner moved back to the Burgtheatre and performed in productions at the Raimund Theater and at the Theater in der Josefstadt often playing character roles. He made his first appearance in the movie of the country called Der Engel mit der Posaune that was directed by Karl Hartl in the year 1948. The following year he played the role of Ludwig van Beethoven's nephew Karl in the movie called Eroica.
He moved to the United Kingdom in the year 1950 with the purpose of reprising the role he played in Der Engel mit der Posaune in the English version of the film called The Angel with the Trumpet that was directed by Anthony Bushell.
Oskar Werner died on the 23rd October 1984 of a heart attack. He was buried in his adopted country of Liechtenstein.
