Josef Meinrad was born as Josef Moucka in the city of Vienna; he was the
4th and final child of the tram driver Franz
Moučka and his second wife Katharina. For his secondary school, he got a
scholarship in a school run by Redemptorists in Katzelsdorf near Wiener
Neustadt. He at first had the intentions of being a priest, but he excaped from
the boarding school in the year 1929 and became a clerk while he was receiving
lessons on acting. He made his first public acting appearance in the year 1930.
His first engagement with the Burgtheatre was in the year 1939 and he played
then at the Salsburg Festival in the year 1947. He later in that year became a
full member of the Burgtheatre Company and was a member of the ensemble until
his 65th birthday in the year 1978. He played the total of 195 roles
on the stage.
He was the keeper of
the Iffland-Ring that has been given to the most crucial actor of the German
Speaking theatre for 200 years; he passed the ring to Bruno Ganz.
Josef Meinrad was married to Germaine Renée
Clement from the year 1950 till he died of cancer in the year 1996 at the age
of 82. His wife died in the year 2006.
