Jorge Mateus de Lima was born on the 23the April 1893 in União
dos Palmares; he died on the 15th November 1953 in the city of Rio
de Janeiro. He was a Brazilian politician, physician, biographer, painter,
translator, an essayist, a poet and a novelist.

At first, his poetry
was composed in the Alezandrine pattern, though he later modernized his pattern.
Biography
Jorge Mateus de Lima was the son of a rich merchant. At the age of 9,
Jorge Mateus de Lima moved to Maceio with the mother and his siblings. At the
age of 16 in the year 1909, Jorge Mateus de Lima moved to Salvador and it was
there that he started his medical studies. He finished his studies in the city
of Rio de Janeiro in the year 1914, though he made his mind up become popular
in the country as a poet. In that same year, he published his first poem book
called Alexandrians XIV.
Jorge Mateus de Lima moved back to Maceio in the year 1915 and it was
there that he put much time in medicine, politics and literature. He worked as
a member of the Legislative assembly of Alagos from the year 1918 to the year
1922. The revolution of the country of the year 1930 gave him the inspiration
to move to the city of Rio de Janeiro and it was there that he set up an office
beside the Cinelandia. After some time, the office was served as a studio of
art and a meeting point for some intellectuals of the country. It was also
there that he made friends with some writers of the country like Murilo
Mendes, Graciliano Ramos and José Lins do Rego. At this period, Jorge Mateus de Lima published the total of
10 books, including 5 poetry collections.
Jorge Mateus de Lima converted to a Roman Catholic member in the year
1935 and many of his poems reflect towards that.
Jorge Mateus de Lima made up his mind to put more time in visual art also
in the year 1939 and he took part in some exhibitions in the country. In the
year 1952, he published his most crucial book called Invention of Orpheus. Three months before he died
in the year 1953, Jorge Mateus
de Lima recorded poems for the Archives of the Spoken Word at the Library of
Congress in the country.
