José Veríssimo Dias de Matos was born on the 8th April 1857;
he died on the 2nd December 1916. He was a Brazilian writer,
educator, a journalist, a critic and one of the founding members of the
Brazilian Academy of Letters.

José Veríssimo Dias de Matos was born in the city of Óbidos,
Pará, he was the son of José Veríssimo de Matos and Ana Flora Dias de Matos. He
spent his early school days in Manaus and Belem. He was sent to the city of Rio
de Janeiro to continue with his studies in the year 1869, though he went back
because of his poor health. He devoted his life to teaching and journalism.
From the year 1895 to the year 1899, José
Veríssimo Dias de Matos went back to the city of Rio de Janeiro to take the
position of a professor in Collegio Pedro II.
